Background of the Study
Traditional diviners have historically held significant roles in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government, Abia State, serving as custodians of spiritual knowledge and mediators of cultural practices. Their insights, derived from ancestral wisdom and ritual expertise, have been central to community decision-making and conflict resolution. However, contemporary societal changes, including the influence of modern education, religious transformations, and technological advancements, have altered public perceptions of traditional diviners (Nwankwo, 2023). While some community members continue to revere diviners for their cultural significance, others question their relevance in a modern context (Anyanwu, 2024). Recent research reveals a growing ambivalence toward traditional divination, with perceptions shifting towards skepticism and commodification (Iroanya, 2025). This study appraises the evolving perceptions of traditional diviners, examining the factors driving these changes and their implications for indigenous spiritual practices. Progress persists.

Statement of the Problem
Changing perceptions of traditional diviners in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government have led to a decline in the societal authority and cultural influence of indigenous divination practices. The shift, driven by modern educational values and religious innovations, challenges the legitimacy of traditional diviners (Nwankwo, 2023). Community attitudes are increasingly characterized by skepticism and diminished respect for ancestral rituals (Anyanwu, 2024). This transformation raises concerns about the erosion of indigenous spiritual knowledge and cultural identity (Iroanya, 2025). The study seeks to identify the factors influencing these changing perceptions and to propose measures to preserve the cultural role of traditional diviners. Urgent cultural preservation strategies are absolutely needed to support diviners.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To appraise the changing perceptions of traditional diviners.

  2. To assess the impact of modern influences on indigenous divination practices.

  3. To propose strategies for preserving the cultural significance of traditional diviners.

Research Questions:

  1. How have perceptions of traditional diviners changed in Isiala Ngwa North?

  2. What factors contribute to the shifting attitudes towards divination practices?

  3. How can the cultural role of traditional diviners be preserved amid modern influences?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Modern influences significantly alter public perceptions of traditional diviners.

  2. Changing perceptions negatively impact the cultural authority of divination practices.

  3. Preservation strategies can sustain the relevance of traditional diviners in modern society.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the evolving perceptions of traditional diviners and their cultural implications in Isiala Ngwa North. It provides insights for cultural custodians, policymakers, and community leaders to develop strategies that preserve indigenous spiritual practices and promote cultural continuity (Nwankwo, 2023). Ultimately, the findings contribute to sustaining the cultural heritage associated with traditional divination.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the changing perceptions of traditional diviners in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government, Abia State. It focuses on cultural and perceptual aspects, excluding other indigenous spiritual practices.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Traditional Diviners: Indigenous spiritual practitioners who interpret spiritual messages through rituals.

  2. Modern Influences: Contemporary factors such as education, technology, and religious reforms.

  3. Cultural Heritage: The legacy of cultural practices and beliefs passed down through generations.
